Samsung, like its competitors Apple and Google, has made AI a key selling point for its smartphones this year, releasing the Galaxy S24, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and Galaxy Z Flip 6.
Features like Sketch to Image, which generates an image based on a drawing you made, Transcript, which allows you to transcribe voice recordings to text, and Circle to Search are the initial use cases the company showcased in early January and has been rolling out across its latest devices.
Here is more about the features available across the new lineup as well as the S23 and Flip 5 series:
Circle to Search:Â Allows you to draw on any part of your screen to perform a visual search.
Sketch to Image:Â Converts your sketches into images in various styles.
Live Translate and Interpreter: Uses AI to translate phone calls in real-time while you’re on the phone.
Chat Assist:Â Messages are translated on-device to show both the original language and the translated one to ensure the whole conversation is understandable.
Note Assist:Â In the Samsung Note App, this feature interacts with your notes to make changes, including generating a summary or formatting the note to a new style.
Transcript Assist:Â Transcribes a recording into text (including identifying speakers) and then allows you to translate or summarize the recording.
These features are basic as AI moves to devices, but like the very first iPhone, which was basic compared to today’s advances, we can expect to see more features rolled out in the coming months as new smartphone versions are released.
The obvious trend across these efforts is that while most tech companies feel pressured to deliver some form of AI, many have yet to build their own LLMs. This forces them into partnerships with advanced AI players, like Apple with OpenAI and Samsung with Google, which built Galaxy on top of Gemini and essentially replaced Bixby.
